The cream gene is a recessive gene.  Being recessive means that a hamster needs two of these genes (one from each parent) to have the cream coloration.  The cream gene can be carried recessively and not show up in the coat at all.  Breeding to a cream or to another hamster carrying the cream gene, though, will produce some cream babies.

The cream gene is also a "masking" gene, but it only masks one color:  black..  In the case of cream, masking means that if a hamster has both two black genes and two cream genes, the babies will all look cream instead of a combined color.
